For most properties, solar panel maintenance is less about heavy upkeep and more about knowing what normal looks like. That matters whether you are running a domestic installation on a pitched roof or managing a larger commercial system where even small drops in generation can affect operating costs.

How to maintain solar panels without overdoing it

The first thing to understand is that solar panels are designed to be durable. They are built to handle wind, rain and changing temperatures, and in the UK our weather often helps with basic surface cleaning. That said, rain will not remove everything. Dust, bird droppings, leaves, pollen and traffic film can still build up over time, especially in drier spells or on sites near roads, trees, farms and industrial premises.

In practice, that means checking the system visually from ground level when possible, reviewing performance data regularly and arranging professional maintenance when there are signs of reduced output, dirt build-up or visible wear.

Start with performance, not the roof

One of the best maintenance habits is simply to monitor generation. Most modern solar PV systems include an inverter display or online monitoring platform that shows daily, monthly and historical output. This gives you a baseline. Once you know what your system typically produces in spring, summer and winter, unusual changes become easier to spot.

A sudden dip can point to a fault, shading issue or inverter problem. A gradual decline may suggest dirt accumulation or component ageing. It depends on the site and season, so context matters. Output naturally changes with daylight hours, cloud cover and temperature, so a lower figure is not automatically a cause for concern. The real question is whether the system is underperforming compared with its usual pattern in similar conditions.

Cleaning solar panels safely
